Cambodia Siem Reap Phnom Bakheng

Behind us is the view of Phnom Bakheng (Left). Phnom Bakheng is the favourite place to watch sunset in Angkor. This is probably the first place most tourist will see in Angkor as well. The reason is because a day pass of USD25 (Year 2007) is valid from 5pm the day before and therefore to get your money's worth, watching sunset in Phnom Bakheng makes prefect sense.

The best time to watch sunset will be from 6pm till 7pm local time. Hordes of tourists will start congregating at the area from as early as 5pm. There are 3 ways to get to the summit of the structure (1st bottom), 1st by ridding an elephant - orange path, 2nd through the dangerous steep path which is probably sealed off - red path or 3rd by foot - green path. For those who opt for the 3rd option, a short walk of 10-15 minutes on the dirt path is required to get to the foot of the structure (2nd bottom).
After the short walk, you'll arrive at the foot of the structure. From here, another climb on the stairs will be required to get to the summit (1st bottom). When I arrived, many tourists were already making their way to the top. If crowds are not your liking then you can circle around to the sides and make your way to the top as well. The side stairs are less crowded because many people are just too excited to climb the very first stairs they see (2nd Bottom).
Yes, the steps are very steep and there will be many people struggling to get up the stairs so you have to be extra careful when making your way up there. Warnings are in-place as a soft reminder of the risk involved (Bottom).
A large contingent of tourists have already made their way to the summit (1st bottom). Take your time to look around and explore the area as it is very interesting (2nd bottom). At the back of Phnom Bakheng, tourists who took the elephant rides arrives (3rd bottom).
You'll probably enjoy exploring the area until you'll lose track of time. However, once the sunset begins, it will hit you and you'll be captivated by the beautiful golden hue (Bottom). Also in the view of the photo is a hot air ballon which is another great way to enjoy the scenes around Angkor. The strains of walking and climbing will all be forgotten.
